Children's Dentistry

Taking care of your teeth starts early in childhood and extends throughout your life. We treat children and teenagers at Parks Family Dental at our friendly dental office in Mauldin, SC.

We are very proud of the level of care we provide to our younger patients, and we always look forward to welcoming new patients to our dental family. At Parks Family Dental, we treat every child with a gentle hand and an experienced and engaging team of practitioners.

Our Children’s Dentistry Services

Parks Family Dental offers various dental services for children with the kind and attentive care and expertise they deserve. In other words, we are gentle with your little one’s chompers!

Dental Exams and Cleanings

Regularly scheduled dental cleanings are the best ways to maintain healthy smiles. We understand that children may feel nervous or uneasy in the dental chair, but our friendly team will comfort your child and ensure they feel safe and confident in our care. We also offer neck pillows, TVs, and other comforts to make their visit more pleasant for additional relaxation.

Dental Sealants

Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and maintaining regular dental visits are the best ways to prevent cavities. Sometimes, however, our younger patients need a little extra help, which is why we offer cavity-fighting sealants.

Sealants are like raincoats for your teeth, as they protect teeth from decay and keep them dry and clean from a storm of bacteria. To apply a sealant, either the dentist or dental hygienist cleans the teeth and applies sealants to pits, fissures, and chewing surfaces.

The American Dental Association states that sealants have reduced the risk of decay by nearly 80 percent in molars.

Professional Fluoride Treatments

Every child has different needs and some may require fluoride treatment to keep their teeth cavity-free. Fluoride is a compound that contains the natural element fluorine. Fluorine can be found in drinking water and is safe for children and adults. We use topical fluoride applications to slow down cavities and prevent them from spreading.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings are an excellent option for treating tooth decay in children. These noninvasive fillings contain high-quality composite resin material that we bond directly to the tooth. Composite fillings resemble the appearance and shade of natural teeth so your child can maintain a white and attractive grin.

Oral Hygiene Guidance

We focus on patient education and preventive care because we want your child to have healthy teeth and gums that last a lifetime. In addition to caring for growing teeth, we also encourage kids to brush and floss every day so they can stay cavity-free and happy.

Frequently Asked Questions

As family dentists, one of our goals is to partner with parents to assist them in protecting their child’s oral health. Many of our daily choices affect your child’s smile, such as their home care routine and diet. Here are the most common ways you can help your child prevent cavities.

Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene at Home

Practicing good oral hygiene begins even before your baby gets their first tooth. To clean their mouth, gently rub a warm washcloth or wet gauze on their gums to remove bacteria. When their first teeth come in, you can start brushing their teeth with a soft-bristled baby toothbrush.

As they get older, you can use very small amounts of fluoride toothpaste to brush their teeth. For parents concerned about using fluoride toothpaste, you can ask your dentist to use xylitol toothpaste instead.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Helping your child eat a balanced diet and assisting them with brushing and flossing can ensure their teeth and gums stay healthy and bright. Instead of sweets or potato chips, opt for carrot sticks or fresh fruit.

Schedule Regular Dental Checkups

In addition to consistent brushing and flossing, your child must see the dentist to ensure they don’t have cavities or other dental health issues. We recommend seeing children every six months for routine checkups and cleanings by the time they turn one year old.
